Why Temples Must Enforce Dress Codes

The True Purpose of Worship

We go to a temple for one primary reason-to become better human beings. Whether one is there for healing, for wealth & prosperity or for penance, the underlying reason for being there is to transform ourselves for the better.

But if that is the case, why then do many resent a strict dress code & insist:

"Why does the clothes I wear matter? Should it not just be about God? If you don't like it, just shut your eyes!"

While the conversation with the Almighty does go beyond our bodies & is not a matter of anyone judging another, a temple is a sacred space where everyone is considered an equal. Hence outward differences must be shed. It is not a space to flaunt one's individuality or dress provocatively.

Equality & Indian Spirit

In a temple there are no distinctions of money, status or even education. Every one of us is a child of the Almighty & therefore must be treated equally.

This equality can be represented by the greeting "Namaste", "Namaskaram" or "Namashiva" in different Indian languages, where it means

"The soul in me bows down to the soul in you."

This beautiful sentiment is truly an Indian treasure.

In a temple, one's devotion to God is reflected in one's reverence to the sanctity of its premises. Cleaning one's heart, one's body & one’s surroundings in a temple is also part of worship. But cleanliness doesn't magically happen. It is the duty of efficient administration of a temple to implement suitable & uniform rules for everyone.

Dealing with Hypocrisy

We all work towards our collective aim; & all of us happily don uniforms to school or work. So why should respecting the temple by adhering to a small dress code appear such a big imposition?

Is it unnecessary to leave footwear out of the temple? We leave our shoes & socks outside & cleanse our feet before entering. But this action itself is a practical step towards keeping the temple floor clean from all dirt, germs & unpleasant odors & keeping the premises sanitary for everyone.

If you truly believe that God does not care about hygiene; then why go to the temple at all. Pray to your God from any other place in any attire- shorts or a lungi!

Conclusion

We must approach God as the personification of pure all that is pure. The Almighty instructs us to be clean not just internally but externally too & to have respect for everything that surrounds us.

Much like schools & offices that enforce uniform codes, temples have rules not to curtail us but to make our devotion a truly worthwhile experience, to transform our minds & outlook to complement the solemnity of a temple.

The temple administration is therefore expected to strictly enforce all dress code regulations on all people, unequivocally. Only those who desire to truly worship & better themselves will comply readily. If one can't adhere to such simple rules, they are not where they belong.
