Active Engagement: The Science behind Shielding Children from Addiction

 





There is profound scientific accuracy in the age-old adage: "An idle mind is the devil's workshop."

The human being's ability to become a sentient & creative creature is linked intrinsically to our wiring, which drives us to think, analyze, plan & execute. Apart from periods of deep slumber, the human brain remains a veritable powerhouse of cogitation.

When this mental force is not guided in any direction, it becomes extremely susceptible to negative outcomes, which may include addiction to devices, alcohol or drugs. The antithesis is parents who have been able to raise resistant & addiction-free offspring, in that they have learned the right way to channel their child's cognitive potential.

Foundations of Behavior

The factors which shape the child's perception & behaviors are:

The Inner Circle:

Parental influence, family ethics & emotional security

Spirituality:

A base of love & reverence for God, as well as an understanding of cause & effect (Karma)

The Environment:

The influence from school environment, neighborhood interactions, teachers, peers.

When all these fundamental aspects are sound, a child is very safe from deleterious practices, their idle thoughts channeled towards constructive activity instead of withdrawal.

A Critical Window: Age 14-21

A human's existence is in its most impressionable phase between the ages of 14-21. It is during this time that a youngster's brain undergoes remodeling that makes it vulnerable to risks & influence by other young people. It is by keeping these children engaged that good parents make it through this tough stage of life; however, with today's generation of tech savvy youngsters becoming easily bored, parents must adapt & realize that their child's interest is peaking or plateauing & direct it elsewhere beforenegative influences intervene.

Healthy outlets for a growing mind:

Physical/creative activities:

Sports, classical music, dancing, singing, writing or sketching.

Spiritual activities:

Visiting sacred places, such as temples to instill a sense of divine peace, appreciation & morality.

Conclusion:

It is of extreme importance that parents realize that not all activities appeal to children equally; one must be attentive & find what his/her child finds genuinely engaging. Once he/she has found this & it starts to bore him/her, the parent should find other things to divert the attention before there is no other way than to use things to escape; importantly, while guiding these activities, parents must maintain proximity of their child to well-meaning people so they don't end up around wrong friends. If parents keep children occupied with their activities, the addiction cannot make its way in.
