The Science behind the Shadow: Unearthing Vedic Truths from Cultural Beliefs on Eclipse

Every civilization is like an immense library of knowledge. The problem is that, with time, pure science gets lost within superstition. This phenomenon is not particular to India but is a universal tendency of humanity. Where arrogance, dogmatism & an inability to learn from mistakes prevail, science becomes entombed in dogma.

As an example we can consider the unfortunate case of “Giordano Bruno” who was burnt alive at the stake in 16th Century Europe merely for claiming that the Earth was round and that the universe was infinite.

He possessed a scientifically sound notion but had simply come into being at the wrong time in the world. Thousands of years prior to this Indian Vedic text, which state the Earth is round & contain scientific reasoning to explain planetary motion, were already in existence.

To gauge how ancient Indian scholars approached real knowledge one can consult the Rasaratna Samuchayam which comes to about 800 AD.

“Na kramena vinaa saastram na saastrena vina karma; Sastram kramayutham janathvaa ya: karoti sa siddhibhak”

The literal meaning is: "There is no science without system; there is no purposeful action without science. He who knows science as a systematic process knows all and is a scientist."

Clearly, ancient Indian Rishis were not engaged in superstitious babbling but in rigorous & systematic scientific inquiry &this resulted in brilliant work in the fields of astronomy, physics, mathematics, metallurgy, surgery, mental health etc. We must therefore assume that the rules regarding cosmic occurrences like eclipses were not invented by the superstitious minds of our ancestors but based on verifiable facts.

The effects of lens through which we view.

We, as modern people have a responsibility to distinguish the science in a tradition from the cultural scrap that it has collected over five thousand years; else we would be making a mockery of our forefathers & our ancestors.

We cannot afford to be like a child looking at a tree & not being able to distinguish the real tree from the branches or the leaves or a bird that is perched on it.

The problem with some peopleis they try to view our tradition through their narrow scientific or religious lens, whatever the case may be & in the process they see what they are conditioned to seeing & not the truth as it is.

Consider this:

Four men are looking at a woman who is standing at a bus-stop. Her reality does not change, but these four men perceive her quite differently:

Mr. A:Thinks that she has a bearing reminiscent of my mother and treats her with respect.

Mr. B: In his eagerness, finds a suitable life-partner in her & daydreams.

Mr. C: Is not interested in anything but what he sees in the woman (a figure that fits the current stereotype) & moves on without another thought.

Mr. D: Thinks of the woman with a perverse attitude & imagines her to be somebody that she most likely isn't.

The woman does not change, only the imagination of the men change.

So do not be fooled by the way some vested interested people interpret“Vedic Science”; it might suit their paradigm but may or may not be close to the real scientific notion.

There is cosmic influence on biology & the circadian rhythm.

To decipher the science behind ancient customs of abstaining from food or not stepping outside during an eclipse we need to see what role the celestial body plays in our terrestrial life.

All living organisms have an inherent biological rhythm that helps their survival. These rhythm is controlled by external cycles like the change in sunlight and darkness of the Earth and is called the circadian rhythm which regulates body metabolism, hormone release & sleep cycles.

This rhythm in living beings is in direct sync with the cycle of sunlight that we receive. During an eclipse the light supply that our body craves is abruptly interrupted. Scientific research has demonstrated that intentional alteration of our body's internal clock results in significant deterioration of physical & psychological health. This happens because all living matter & thus all life functions are carried out by highly time-sensitive chemical reactions & disruption of this rhythm causes disturbance to the cellular, psychological & emotional function of humans, animals & plants alike.

Living Systems vs. Prepared Food.

There is a significant difference in how living matter & inanimate matter respond to such cosmic changes. The former being a living system can self-repair damage caused by it & hence can counteract these disruptions to a certain extent.

However prepared food (which is inert matter) since it has been devoid of life, is incapable of self-correction when subject to changes in its chemical composition. Such compounds in the prepared food could potentially turn out to be detrimental when consumed &the reason why ancient practices dictate discarding it. Toxicity is also a potential cause. A substance does not have to be lethal to be considered toxic, in fact slow acting toxins that affect cell regeneration over a long duration are far more dangerous, as are substances that are known carcinogens.

Modern science agrees with the fact that exposure to the direct rays of an eclipse damage the human eye & is carcinogenic, however it has not studied in great detail what chemical alterations occur in our body, as also what effects they would have on the food that we consume & thus fails to understand why ancient traditions have dictated these rules.

Much like how animals sense environmental changes through minute details we have somehow lost the sense of anticipating impending cosmic events due to the way we live our life now. We are on the verge of having modern science finally uncover these facts but until then we must assume they were correct in the first place.

He tended to avoid women.  He considered that to live a peaceful life, women are to be kept away from his life as they represented trouble and temptations. He always thought logically and never made decisions without thinking.  He has been that way all his life.  But there was no logic as to why he wanted her to be his wife when they first met.

Dr. Ingrid finds out that the DNA strands belonging to her and the person she now calls "Kigeni" (an alien in Swahili) are distinct from any DNA strands found on Earth.  She and her life partner discover that these DNA strands had coding sequences artificially added to humans at least 80,000 years ago.
