It draws millions of individuals who hold vastly different perspectives, uniting not just various schools of Hinduism but also offshoots faiths like Jainism, Buddhism & Sikhism all of which originated in Bharat (India) as distinct paths toward the Divine.

To appreciate this phenomenon, consider the strict contrast between traditional temple worship & the atmosphere of the Kumbh Mela.

The Standard of Purity in Hindu Temples

When entering a traditional Hindu temple, adhering to strict principles of physical & mental purity is essential. While footwear removal is universally enforced, devotees also personally observe a meticulous set of traditional rules based on their spiritual upbringing:

Sanctity:

Priests maintain rigorous personal cleanliness & ritually purify the temple daily.

Preparation: 

Devotees wash their hands & feet and wear clean clothing before entering.

Offerings: 

Items presented to the deity are often sprinkled with water to cleanse them of negative energies.

Dietary Restrictions: 

Non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited; anyone who has consumed it must abstain from entering the temple that day.

Mourning & Birth Rituals: 

Traditional customs dictate a period of spiritual quarantine. After attending a funeral, a bath is mandatory before entering a temple. Depending on regional customs, families abstain from temple visits or lighting ritual lamps at home for a set number of days (e.g., 5 or 14 days) following a birth or a death in the family.

While everyday devotees arrive seeking spiritual cleansing & pilgrimage, they share the space with the Naga Sadhus. The Naga Sadhus live by principles that are the exact opposite of standard temple etiquette. They cover themselves in ashes from cremation grounds, shattering conventional boundaries of custom & belief.

Remarkably, the very same deity Lord Shiva who is worshipped with immaculate purity inside a temple is revered by the Naga Sadhus in a manner that defies those very rules.

A Beautiful Tapestry of Humanity

At the Kumbh Mela, these millions of people with opposing practices come together. They immerse themselves side-by-side in the exact same sacred waters, their bodies touching.

An ordinary devotee who would typically rush to bathe after a funeral to cleanse the association with death willingly stands next to a Naga Sadhu covered in funeral ashes. In fact, that same devotee might bow to touch the Sadhu’s feet, seeking his blessings. The ashes wash away into the river, merging everyone into a single spiritual collective.

This seamless coexistence is only possible because Hinduism is less a rigid dogma & more an ocean. It intricately weaves together customs, culture, science, health, environmental respect & diverse spiritual philosophies. It embraces its offshoots, allowing everyone to gather as one, yet pray to their own deities.

This spirit of ultimate inclusivity thrives because of the timeless Vedic invocation that guides it:

Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ

Sarve santu nirāmayāḥ

Sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu
